The Maple Society

Book Review Autumn 2015 Edition by Mike Walker

There are many excellent books available on Japanese maples, but this is the first practical guide to cover all aspects of growing these beautiful trees. Based on over 20 years experience and numerous

Royal Horticultural SocietyGold medals, Neil & Cath Kenney of Larchfield Trees nursery, near Coventry, UK, explain all the aspects of successful maple growing. The contents includes propagation, potting, planting, pruning, pest and diseases and their use in Bonsai, interspersed with excellent images and descriptions of some of the most popular,as well as lesser known cultivars. It even includes a guide to selecting the right

tree for different garden aspects and a glossary of terms to demystify the names of many Japanese varieties.

Having recently spent several days fielding questions from the public on the Maple Society’s stand at the Gardeners’ World Live exhibition in Birmingham, UK, members can be sure that the section in this book headed ‘FAQs’ (p124) will direct the reader to answers to all of the common questions we were asked,

such as “why are the edges of the leave turning brown”, plus many others. Even experienced maple

growers may find some new tips in this book. For example, I learned that sugar water

stimulates root growth in newly planted or potted trees (p55)The book is beautifully presented and illustrated in association with the late Paul Goff, sadly missed by his many friends in the Bonsai world. The text is clear and concise, aided by Neil’s and Paul’s photography which is of the highest quality and clarity. Although experienced maple growers may find it a little basic, the book offers a comprehensive guide for gardeners who are new to  growing maples or who wish to extend their knowledge.

As such it offers very excellent value.
